Ski and winter sports travel insurance - what must be checked?

In brief

Skiing and snowboarding are not just a regular holiday activity. PassportCard explains that ski or snowboard trips require dedicated winter sports cover, which is different from a general adventure sports add-on. Review injury treatment, evacuation, equipment, unused ski days, traveler age and resort conditions.

Why does skiing require a dedicated add-on?

Skiing and snowboarding involve injury risks, expensive equipment and sometimes evacuation from the resort, so they should not be assumed covered under a base policy.

PassportCard notes that ski and snowboard trips require winter sports cover. This is a dedicated add-on for snow activities and is not necessarily the same as general adventure sports.

Going on the slopes without the right add-on may result in a ski-related event being excluded.

What should be checked in the policy?

Check that the policy includes winter sports, not only general medical cover.

Important points include treatment following a ski injury, evacuation from the resort, medical transport if required, ski equipment, unused ski days and deductibles.

Also check whether cover applies only on marked slopes or to other activities.

Winter sports vs adventure sports

Winter sports cover applies to activities such as ski and snowboard; adventure sports cover applies to other activities such as diving, rafting or climbing.

PassportCard identifies ski and snowboard as requiring winter sports cover. The activity should be specifically checked, not assumed.

If the trip includes other activities, such as snowmobiles or off-road driving, check whether those activities are covered.

What about ski equipment?

Ski equipment, clothing, helmet, camera or phone may not be automatically covered.

If equipment is brought from Israel or rented at the resort, review baggage and valuable-items terms. Cameras, laptops or phones may require separate cover.

Keep receipts and rental confirmations, especially for expensive equipment.

When should cover be purchased?

It is best to arrange ski insurance soon after booking the trip and not wait until departure day.

Ski holidays can include expensive flights, hotels, lift passes and equipment. Trip cancellation or curtailment cover may also be relevant, subject to the policy terms.

Before buying, check that every traveler in the family or group has the correct add-on.
